The latest QSLs

July 27, 2014 By: admin Category: BC-stations, DX-listening, QSL

Some new QSLs have arrived to the reception reports which I sent in June-July. These are mostly stations I heard in February. I still have not started sending out emails to FM stations of the season. There is lots of work …

650. France Bleu 107.1 864 kHz

After few attempts I got a QSL email from this Paris local. V/s was Patricia Mercier and Patrik, PW gave her contact address.

651. WQOM Natick MA 1060 kHz

The station of the cross replied via Gina Zanicky, Director of Radio Production.

652. WWFE Miami FL 670 kHz

It took few attempts to get this one, but I got verification to my report via Facebook.

653. CBGA-1 Grande Anse NB 540 kHz

My 3rd NA QSL from 540 kHz. Jimmy Berthelot, Superviseur Technique replied quickly.

654. WMKI Boston MA 1260 kHz

The most common of these NA stations I have listed in this post. Kathleen Maitino, Station Manager replied via email quickly.

655. WZON Bangor MA 620 kHz

Nice catch and nice QSL. V/s was Deke Rhinehart, Digital Media Director.

656. WEZE Boston MA 590 kHz

VOCM usually dominates here, so I was glad to received the confirmation of my reception report. V/s was Frank Kelley N1KQT, Chief Engineer – Salem Radio Boston.

657. WDER Derry NH 1320 kHz

This like all other NA stations here was heard in the 5th of February during the extremely good NE US opening. I suppose that WDER still had their daytime power on when I heard them at 2159Z. Minimalistic reply was: “You certainly did hear WDER.”

658. Radio HIJB, Santo Domingo 830 kHz

I heard HIJB 3 times during the last season, but it took few rounds of emails to get this pleasant QSL from the diretor, Luis Manuel Soto.

Spring / Early Summer QSLs

June 19, 2014 By: admin Category: BC-stations, DX-listening, QSL

I finished my MW season about six weeks ago. I’ve been a bit lazy to send reception reports, but some interesting QSLs have arrived. FM season has also started but it has been very disappointing so far.

642. Radio Pakistan, Peshawar 1260 kHz

This one arrived by mail. I heard this new MW tx from Pakistan last October, so it took over 5 months to arrive.

643. WMMB Melbourne FL 1240 kHz

I still have some US stations to send reception reports. The Regional Program Manager of WMMB, Ken Holiday, replied quickly. WMMB was heard in the 4th of February, same time with WDMC Melbourne FL on 920.

644. CMHW Doblevé, Santa Clara 840 kHz

CMHW was quite regular station on 840 kHz with another Cuban, Radio Revolución. 840 kHz is interesting station as any South American station is rare. From Central America I heard also R Nacional de Panama and 4VEH La voix évangélique d’Haïti last season. Doblevé replied via Facebook but it took 2,5 months.

645. HJAZ Frecuencia Bolivariana, Monteria 1160 kHz

Frecuencia Bolivariana is very rare station but it was heard by several Finnish DXers in the 21st of January. This is the station run by Universidad Pontificia Bolivaria. HJAZ replied quickly via Facebook.

646. HJZT Radio Auténtica, Manizales 1570 kHz

I heard Radio Auténtica same time than Frecuencia Bolivariana. This one is not as rare as Auténtica, but not an easy catch either. They replied in 10 days via email.

647. CP115 Radio Caranavi 1550 kHz

QSL from Bolivia is always the worth of big HURRAY! Caranavi was my 4th QSL from Bolivia. Out of blue they replied in 3 months to my follow-up email. I don’t think that anyone heard Caranavi in Finland during this season.

648. HJDU Emisora Cultural Universidad de Antioquia, Medellin 1410 kHz

Emisora Cultural is quite easy to hear on 1410 kHz. It doesn’t ID very often but it is easy to recognize as they broadcast a lot of jazz and classic music. Secretaria Ana Cristina Guisao David replied via mail in 10 days.

649. HCGC5 RCG Radio, Gualaceo 1410 kHz

This was the mystery to me before I got a clip from Gert, GNH who heard this with much better signal in Sweden. After few attemps RCG Radio replied to me via Facebook. First one in Finland perhaps?

The latest QSLs – some nice ones from South America

April 11, 2014 By: admin Category: BC-stations, DX-listening, QSL

South America has produced not just good propagation but some good QSLs. I stil a bit behind with my reception reports: currently sending emails to stations which I heard on late January. Some good catches I have reported right away after hearing them.

635. WHBC Canton OH 1480 kHz

Even band condx to USA are gone for this season, still some QSLs flow in. WHBC is not a rare station but I have heard them only once, last January with “News Talk 14-80 WHBC” slogan. CE Dale Lamm confirmed in 12 days via email.

636. OCU2D Chami Radio, Otuzco 1140 kHz

Recent catch (1.4.2014). Chami Radio was well heard in Finland and Sweden in the same morning. They have confimed via Facebook to many listeners.

637. YVRZ Radio Dos Mil, Cumaná 1500 kHz

One of the most common SA stations on MW. They replied now quickly to my follow up reception report. YV QSL is always nice – they are a bit rare at least to me even I have heard plenty of them.

638. OBX2D Radio Chota, Chota 1310 kHz

Last week’s big suprise. Also that they verified my report quickly via Facebook. This might be the first time that this station was heard in Finland on MW.

639. HJIJ La Voz de La Raza, Medellin 1200 kHz

This station was heard during the strong Medellin opening on the 16th of January. Gerente Jose Omar Fuentes replied via email.

640. YVRM BBN Radio, Caracas 1260 kHz

BBN stations are easy to confirm via “BBN Español”. Caracas 1260 is a difficult catch as it is on EU QRG, but “Medellin propagation” brought also this Venezuelan station.

641. OAU7Z Radio Carráviz, Juliaca 1570 kHz

When the band is open to Peru, this station could be heard with Bethel on 1570. I already sent them report in last May. Now Ivan Tito Vizcarra replied with “mass replay” to three listeners.

The latest QSLs – mostly NA

April 03, 2014 By: admin Category: BC-stations, DX-listening, QSL

The last couple of days have been very good propagationwise to Ecuador, Peru etc. Not much QSLs coming, been lazy for sending emails and answers have been rare too. Anyhow some additions to my collection:

625. WKBK Keene NH 1290 kHz
After I got v/s information from IKA, I got a quick and nice replay from CE Ira Wilner, W1IRA. I had tried to get QSL before but it needed the right guy to actually get it.

626. WDLX Washington NC 930 kHz and 627. WGHB Farmville NC 1250 kHz
Nice catches from 15th January super condx. Jonathan Ellerbe of “Pirate Radio” confirmed my reception.

628. WEEI Boston MA 850 kHz and 629. WRKO Boston 680 kHz
Also a tip from IKA. Louis Muise, CE sent very nice confirmation via email

630. CJWI Montreal QC 1410 kHz
Regular now on 1410. Jean Ernest Pierre, CEO replied quickly to my French report.

631. WQBA Miami FL 1140 kHz
This is one of those “easier Floridans” – I have heard them 4 times this year. QSL was a bit harder but Loretta Anaya, Vice President, Sales, and Station Manager confirmed my reception.

632. WFLF Pine Hills FL 540 kHz
When heard, it was somewhat a suprise to me. Jim Poling, Program Director confirmed my f/up report in 2 days.

633. WTAM Cleveland OH 1100 kHz
I probably have tried to get QSL before. Now I didn’t get just one replay but three 🙂 Two first ones from two news anchors then third one (on same day) from program manager. The first one came in 5 minutes from Tom Moore, I News Anchor & Reporter I Clear Channel Media + Entertainment.

634. HJA76 Frecuencia U, Medellin 940 kHz
This station was heard around the Finland in the 21st of January and several people share FFF. Confirms via Facebook.

The latest QSLs – Grenada and rare US QSLs

March 14, 2014 By: admin Category: DX-listening, QSL

I am behind with reception reports (2 months) and the listening of files (1 month) because I travelled two weeks in Argentina and Uruguay. I had my world radio with me, but unfortunately I had very little time to listen to bands. In Buenos Aires our hotel was few blocks from RNA 870 AM office and in Montevideo I spotted the office of Radio SODRE. But here are my latest QSLs:

-. WHBY Kimberly WI 1150 kHz
Steve Brown, Director of Broadcast Engineering confirmed with DOC-QSL and JPG-photo 9 months after my email to the station. Better later than never, thanks Steve! Edit: I found that Steve already sent me a short email in March, so this was an extra QSL.

616. WMMN Fairmont WV 920 kHz
This was a cool catch. As far as I know this has been heard in Finland only by HN in October 2013 (in Southern Finland). This was heard “accidently” when I was checking new Panama station logged by PK. Radio Mía identified few minutes after WMMN. I got v/s info from Hannu and then Mark Thompson, Founder/Owner VP of Operations Spectrum Radio Group LLC replied to me quickly.

617. WNNZ Westfield MA 640 kHz
Another very cool QSL. This is not even mentioned here in my blog before as I heard it on the 6th of February. This station has not been heard in Finland before afaik. Chuck Dube, CPBE, Chief Engineer of New England Public Radio, who is a radio amateur (W1CLD) like me (OH1NOA), replied quickly and later send me some material via snail mail too. Chuck even knows some Finnish DXers and has visited at YLE in Helsinki. Certainly this will be very high in my all time QSL top list!

618. Harbour Light, Carriacou 1400 kHz
Harbour Light is very common station but somehow I have not sent me a reception report before. Now I did it and Randy Cornelius replied quickly. Grenada was a new country confirmed.

619. YVNE R Uno, Caracas 1340 kHz
I have heard this YV station 3 times: twice in December and once in January. Carolina Martínez P., Directora General de Administración replied to my email. QSLs from Venezuela are difficult to get!

620. HJKM Emisora Mariana, Bogotá 1400 kHz
The most commong SA station on 1400. Helen Bautista replied in 2 days.

621. HJCS La Voz de Bogotá 930 kHz, 622. HJKN Radio Única, Bogotá 1280 kHz and 623. Radio Cordillera, Bogotá 1190 kHz
Yaned Caro, Coordinadora Administrativa, TODELAR Bogota confirmed all of these (thanks for v/s info to PEH). LV de Bogotá and Cordillera are very common stations, Única is a bit more difficult to hear and I have heard it only once.

624. HJJD NSE Radio, Medellin 1380 kHz
This was quite good catch in December but I heard it again in March. NSE headquarters in Spain confirmed my reception via Facebook.

The latest QSLs

February 10, 2014 By: admin Category: BC-stations, DX-listening, QSL

Slow QSL start for this year.

609. R Rossii/Karelii, Petroskoi 765 kHz
Back in the days I remember that I’ve sent them a reception report from their Finnish programme but got no replay. Now “Юлия Громова” replied in 11 days via email.

610. WLQY Hollywood FL 1320 kHz
I have found this FL-stn few times, but it’s not the most common Florida-station. I got confirmation from Rick Hunt, who is the Vice President and Director of Radio Engineering Entravision Communications.

611. WGIT Faro de Santidad, Canovanas 1660 kHz
WGIT used to be the most common CA-station on Mediumwaves. Lately its signal has been weaker. They also changed their format from news station to religious station with name “Faro de Santidad”. I got my replay from Facebook.

612. HJZI G12 Radio, Bogotá 1550 kHz
G12 has had very good signal lately during the Bogota openings. Fabi Locutora confirmed my reception.

613. Radio Turbo Mix AM, Cajamarca 1540 kHz
This Peru station is fairly easy catch on its split, 1540,5 kHz. Quick replay via email.

614. OCX4R Radio La Inolvidable, Lima 660 kHz
After several attempts I found a v/s information which worked. Manuel Soto F. kindly confirmed my reception via email. Perhaps this is the second QSL from this station to Finland?

615. R Beograd 202 1503 kHz
Thanks to JUS, I got a quick replay from Svetomir Cuckovic, who is 80 years old and has a ham radio call YU7SC. It is also my first QSL from Serbia.

Turbo Mix 1540 AM

Honduras and Guatemala confirmed

January 12, 2014 By: admin Category: BC-stations, DX-listening, QSL

Christmas and new year clearly were a bit quiet time for QSLing although I sent quite a lot of reception reports. Fortunately some interesting catches arrived:

604. Belorussian Radio 1170 kHz

Anton Vasyukevich, Chief Director sent me an English QSL-letter as an attachment of email. This was also a new country for me – one of those “new” post-1991 countries which I was missing.

605. R Rossii Volgograd 567 kHz

This was a nice suprise. Confirmation arrived in 6 days. I have tried to get a QSL few times before but now they finally replied – and asked me an interwiev via Skype. I replied that unfortunately I can’t speak Russian … So far this is the only one of Radio Rossii local stations which has replied to me. Few others (3-4) which I’ve emailed to recently, have been silent.

606. WRNI Providence RI 1290 kHz

Aaron Read, IT & Engineering Director replied with an email to my second reception report. Read has also an interesting blog.

607. CCI Radio, Tegucicalpa 1300 kHz

Patty de Mejía, Comunicaciones replied with nice email quickly. You can read more about this from my recent blog entry. This was a new country for me.

608. TGVE VEA Voz Evangelica de América, Guatemala 1570 kHz

TGVE “Radio Veea” I heard twice in December. They replied via email in 7 days. Also all time new country for me.

QSLs: WSTX for a new country!

December 26, 2013 By: admin Category: BC-stations, DX-listening, QSL

Some new ones:

600. HJJM Radio Auténtica, Cali 660 kHz

Radio Auténtica is not the most common Colombian, only heard it twice this season on this interesting frequency. They replied in one day via Facebook. My 600th QSL!

601. CFCB Corner Brook NL 570 kHz

This 1kW transmitter has been heard regularly during the NA openings opf this season. I sent my report to Richard King, who confirmed my VOCM receptions earlier and he verified my report quickly.

602. WCCO Minneapolis MN 830 kHz

At my QTH the most common US station in this channel is WCRN, but I was able to hear WCCO in November. I sent an email to their address mentioned on website (newstips@..) and by my suprise I got a quick replay from Colin Smith (Anchor/Reporter) and then later another replay from Adam Carter (News Anchor/Reporter). With Adam I wrote few times – as usual we were talking about icehockey (Minnesota Wild)!

603. WSTX St. Croix VI 970 kHz

I have heard this station from US Virgin Islands 3 times this season. My earlier email was not answered. I found the owner of the station, Kevin A. Rames, and emailed my report to his company’s email address – he is an attorney. Kevin replied quickly with a nice email and said that WSTX AM and FM (Caledonia Communications) is a family owned radio station. He is planning to give the radio station to his son when he graduates. This email was a nice suprise and was a new country verified.

Radio Libertad 620 and other new QSLs

December 17, 2013 By: admin Category: BC-stations, DX-listening, QSL

Again some QSLs have arrived.

593. – 595. SER Radio Coruña 1080, SER Radio Pontevedra 1116, SER Radio Valladolid 1044
SER stations have been like a black hole for me. Earlier this year I got zero replies to my email reports. Now I tried Facebook and got immediately 3 replies! I think success rate was 75 % (3 out of 4).

596. HJLR Caracol Radio, Pasto 1280
Puerto Rico is often blocking this frequency, but in November I was lucky to catch this Caracol. Claudia Ortega Sarria, Directora de noticias replied quickly.

597. Radio Libertad 620, Cabimas 620
I heard this rare Venezuelan in September. Reception was quite good. I don’t know if this has ever heard in Finland before. From internet I found Colombian DXer who had got QSL from Libertad. I emailed to him and got some v/s information. I also got similar email contact from Henrik Klemetz. By my suprise two months after my email to Antonio Contin, he replied and confirmed my reception. He also promised to send me something in mail. This is certainly my catch of 2013 together with Bolivian Radio Urkupiña.

598. WMSW Radio Once, Isabela 1120
They confirmed my report on Facebook.

599. ZYK766 Rádio Iguatemi, São Paulo 1370
Osmar Zini replied quickly. My second Brasilian QSL in 2013.

New QSLs – Radio Bacan etc.

December 08, 2013 By: admin Category: BC-stations, DX-listening, QSL

Some QSLs have arrived after I sent a bunch of reception reports.

584. NHK via Sitkunai, Lithuania 1386 kHz
I noticed that I have no QSL from Lithuania (post-USSR). So I emailed a report to NHK Russian department via their web page. They confirmed by email and probably will send a paper QSL later.

585. Radio Khvylia, Vinnitsya 1377 kHz
Short Ukrainian email confirmed my report. This is a new local station from Ukraine.

586. BBC R Cornwall 630 kHz & 95.20 MHz
I sent them an email last summer for my FM-reception, but got no replay. Now after hearing them twice on AM, I sent another email and got quick response confirming my both reports.

587. BBC Radio Jersey 1026 kHz
This was heard same time than I heard Cornwall for the first time. Jon Gripton confirmed via email.

588. BBC Hereford & Worcester 1584 kHz
This one has not replied earlier but now Howard Bentham, Breakfast Presenter confirmed my report.

589. AIR Suratgarh 918 kHz
590. AIR Rajkot 1071 kHz

K.C. Sharma of GOS confirmed my reports quickly. Rajkot is regular here but Suratgarh I have heard only once.

591. WLAM Lewiston ME 1470 kHz
The most common US station on 1470, but I didn’t get any reply via email last winter. Now they verified my report quickly via Facebook.

592. OAX4N Radio Bacán, Lince Lima
This was heard in the 4th of October this year. They replied quickly with a scanned mail … via email 🙂
