SAC – Scandinavian Activity Contest 2015 CW OH1F

September 26, 2015 By: admin Category: Contesting

The propagation was the worst I remember for a while in SAC. I operated with another Timo, OH1TM. I was more or less sick all weekend. Same QRN from FK races that made QRM to MW, was also on SW bands.

Claimed scores (looking good):

Comments:

Low signal levels overall and a strange local s9 QRM on 40 & 20 meters made copying difficult (sorry guys..).

There was a big camping around because of formula karting race at our neighbour (Pori Circuit http://www.porinfkkerho.fi). I think that was the reason for the QRM.

Anyway, thanks for the QSOs, CU in SSB leg!

Comments:

We never even dreamed about such score. This one goes down to history. Weekend
of a lifetime for sure. Making 5000 Qs on 15/20 from ES is syrreal. The new big
15m array really proved itself once again. Nearly 900 JAs on one band is unheard
of. In reality none of the bands had perfect conditions. High bands were still
closed the second night and in the last evening only opened again 1-2 hours
before the end. But all in all the conditions were superb. Over 100 US on 160
in SSB is also fantastic. Matching D4C QSO count from up here is incredible.
10m opening to zone 1 in the last few hours of the contest was really a perfect
cherry on the cake. Simply heaven.

We set DR1A EU record as our target and were very delighted to take an early
lead. In reality it appeared that the 2011 target file was also good for real
time comparison as DR1A guys were tracking it precisely:) Congratulations for
good score to DR1A despite unfavorable propagation. I am sure we are going to
have a very exciting battle in CW part again!

My special thanks goes to:

– Tonu, ES2DW, for feeding again the huge crowd of crazy contesters.
– Oleg, YL3DW, who spent most of the contest repairing failed equipment on the
fly and kept us going. There is nothing he can’t fix!
– Valeri, ES5QA, for making each kind of cables, adapters etc continuously for
2-3 days before the contest.
– Rein, ES5RW, who boldly volunteered to climb nearly to the top of the 70
meter big tower late Friday before the contest to fix broken 80m antenna and
while doing it increasing his personal climbing height record from 20 meters to
50 meters.
– Ranko, 4O3A, for having provided us full sets of HP band pass filters and
triplexers. Wihtout those MM operation would have been impossible. And again
filters/triplexers performed flawlessly triplexers calmly handling the 3 RUN
stations transmitting at the same time for 48 hours.
– Toivo, ES2RR, for providing the bottle of Dom Perignon to celebrate 40
million:)

CU in CW! May the 27 day cycle work again!!

QSLs: CBN, WIOD and YVKH

September 16, 2013 By: admin Category: BC-stations, Contesting, QSL

Condx on the 15th of September were not very good despite of promising indexes. So nothing new found (so far). During the weekend I emailed a bunch of reception reports and even got some answers.

567. CBN St. John’s NL 640 kHz

CBN is one of the most common Canadians here (with VOCM, 930 CJYQ/CFBC and 1400 CBG). I haven’t sent any report to them before this, so I was happy to get a quick replay from Denise Wilson, Managing Director.

568. WIOD Miami FL 610 kHz

WIOD is one of few new NA stations of the season logged so far. Grace Blazer, Program Director replied to me quite quickly. She is also working for 940 WINZ, which should be possible to hear as well.

wiod610

569. YVKH Radio Recuerdos, Caracas 1300 kHz

It has been a challenge to find working email addresses to Latin American stations. I have now heard 26 Venezuelan MW-stations but only got 4 QSLs – almost half of them I have never reached – emails have been bouncing. But YVKH Radio Recuerdos, Caracas replied in 2 days. I believe that this station has been more common in the past, I heard it for the first time on 2.9.2013. V/s was Juan Carlos Bello, Gerente de Mercadeo.

WAEDC CW 2013

August 12, 2013 By: admin Category: Contesting

WAE used to be one of my favourite contests. I even have their special plaque (Stations who have been in the Top-Ten/Top-Six list for at least five times can apply for a special plaque.) and I finally won Europe on SSB part in 2001 (@OG1F). I have also won the RTTY leg something like 20 years ago.

This weekend conditions looked quite good. I had anyway a lack of motivation to operate much: I was using my Microham keyer to work Perseids on 2 meters and also our big tower has to be pointed to East to get correct direction for VHF-yagis at the top (with separate rotator). But anyway few qsos were made:

Call: OH1F

Comments:

Condx sounded quite good and activity low (30 min of CQ on 15m resulted about 10
qsos).

We will see if I’ll make any qsos in SSB or RTTY parts.

European HF Championship 2013

August 07, 2013 By: admin Category: Contesting

Last weekend I decided to activate my old “home QTH” and pulled up a 80 meter dipole to the flagpole. Flagpole is perhaps 7-8 meters tall and the lower part of dipole’s wires were maybe one meter above the ground level. By using FT1000D’s tuner I got it to tune on every band. Unfortunately it didn’t work very well on 15 and 10 meters. I was on about 7 hrs (of 12) and worked exactly 400 qsos, so I think that around 600 qsos would have been possible after full time operation. But having Sauna and some beers (and listening to BC stations) took their tolls.

Call: OH1NOA

== My EUHFC history ==

I noticed from the old results that in 1996 I worked from same QTH 486 qsos in mixed mode class. That time I had all band vertical which would have been nice also this time. In 1997 @OH1AF I finished 3rd in the mixed mode HP class but next year I won the same class (@OH1AF) – my only victory in EUHFC. That time 1042 qsos was enough to win this contest. In 2002 I operated in CW HP class and finished second behind OH2UA @OH0B. In 2003 I returned to CW/SSB HP and I was 3rd behind YT1AD and UY5QQ. Next year OH0B won again and I was 5th. After years of absence I returned in 2010, this time in CW low power class (my amplifier was broken). I finished second behind 9A3VM, I remember that I lost after log checking – difference was only 20 qsos or 6 mults to 9A3VM. In 2011 I was 9th in CW HP class but only 39 kpts behind the winner.

CQ 160M CONTEST CW

January 30, 2012 By: admin Category: Contesting

CQ 160m contest CW part was this weekend. I just worked a bit here and there, total operating time maybe 3 hrs 45 minutes or so. Only NA worked was VY2ZM, who was loud and easy. Also heard few others, N3ZA and K1AR if I remember correctly.

Comments:

“Two operator, one set up” -operation. Had fun!

Propagation was not so good than it has been during this contest season. Low bands were ok, but we couldn’t get much going on during the nighttime. High bands closed to USA/VE very early, so missed some states/provinces.

Christmas storm broke our 20m stacked array, so this time we used only a single yagi for 20m. It is in same tower than 15m yagis but pointing to different direction, so band changes with very slow turning tower were not so quick 🙂

CQWW RTTY CONTEST @OH1F

September 28, 2011 By: admin Category: Contesting, RTTY

For the first time I was operating “assisted” in a major contest. One of the first serious CQWW RTTY contests too … I think I once worked this one from OH1ZAA’s station (some 20 years ago).

FT1000D + WinTest + MMTTY + Microham Keyer II + Alpha 91b + antennae

The best condx for 10 years! The highlight was to work KH6MB during the daytime
on Saturday at 10 meters and then at 22z on 15. Propagation was not as good at
Sunday although it was still ok. It was also challenging to work European
multipliers on high bands.

As I was SO1R this was just relaxed “just for fun” operation. Chasing DX spots
and chatting on WWYC IRC. I had some techincal issues like BSoD of my mini
laptop 4 times during the contest. Also WT had its own tricks and someway I
feel that I am not totally understanding all the features of MMTTY yet (= I
should have more qsos).

CU all in SAC SSB contest 8-9 October, 2011 from OH1F M/M.
