THE HAMRADIO DOT COM

Es-season on FM has been a bit lame in Finland so far. We had nice strong Russian opening on the 11th of May, a bit worse one a day before, then there was a long silence till the 1st of June. The 1st of June started nicely with 20 minutes opening to UK. Midlands/Wales-area brought to me a couple of new ones such as 96.3 Radio Aire, Capital FM South Wales, Smooth Radio West Midlands, Dee 106.3, Sunshine Radio and Signal 107. Then es cloud switched to Middle-Europe, especially to Czech, Slovak and Poland. From Poland I got several new ones like Radio WAWA, PR Radio Opole, Radio ZET Bydgoszcz, Radio Elka and Radio Żnin FM.

The three days later in the 4th of July after 1520 UTC I noticed Es-warning from Botnia saying that band is open to Sevilla. Before this band had been totally dead in Finland but SW Europe had a huge ES-opening. By my suprise the first station I heard on 88.7 MHz was talking in Portuguese. Wait … A quick stream comparasion and yes, it was RDP Antena 2 from Serra de Montejunto, 3239 kilometres away! I just have had my first Portuguese FM station after 34 years of trying! Next went to 90.20: Rádio Renascença was booming there! And actually FM lowband was full of Portuguese stations. Unfortunately I couldn’t get ID from all of them. 89.70 Antena Livre was playing only music but 91.70 RMF IDed nicely. Huh! Propagation lasted 20 minutes and it was one of the highlights of my 38 year DXing career! ES continued with another UK opening. Now Free Radio Herefordshire & Worcestershire, Lincs FM and Capital FM Leicestershire were new catches. Then clouds moved to France and then to Italy but not much interesting was heard.

Suprisingly next day at 1706 UTC 88,7 MHz started to talk in Portuguese again! This time it was Rádio Comercial from Lamego-tx. Signal was not so strong as a day before but this station continued alone in the band for 15 minutes! Just few hours earlier I had received QSL-note from Rádio Comercial heard a day before on 90.80 MHz! You can listen to audio from here. It was booming on 90.80 MHz!

Summer Es (spodaric E) -season started in here in May. So far this season has not been so productive but in the southern coast of Finland DXers have got some excellent results. I’ve got only one really good day (8th June 2017) when FM band was open for hours. My equipment for FM is Perseus SDR with FM+ converter and 5el Triax-yagi some 3m from the ground. I use my station as remote, QTH is about 12km from my home. My location in the west coast of Finland is quite ok for UK/Ireland and France but I am a bit too north for eg. Greece and Turkey. I have fixed antenna direction to 210 degrees, which receives the stations from Romania to Ireland.

The start of the season took some time. Short opening with low MUF to ROU/AUT/CZE. Then at 20z some BBCs on the low band.

FM band was up and down several hours. It peaked 11-12z to Italy with some powerhouse D and HRV also. MUF was hardly over 90 MHz but got some interesting Italians like Millennium, Radio Freccia (new chain), One Dance and Radio LatteMiele Torino.

Short one minute to Italy daytime then 1622-1655 mixed Germany and France. MUF again was not very high. Mostly powerhouses but managed to catch Radio Bonn/Rhein-Sieg. Some F shorties also later in the evening.

I turned my antenna to about 170 degrees so I was able to catch some Ukraine and even some Turkish stations this day. Band was up and down but peaked for 30 minutes to UKR between 1822-1847 UTC. Most of the stations were Russians from the occupied Krim, Simferopol.

Over 4 hours opening mostly to Italy with lots of powerhouses and chain stations on the band. At the beginning of the opening also some RTE and BBC on the band the after the Italians some D, Balkan and CZE. At times MUF was high (over 105 MHz) but not many new Italians found. Radio Marilù, Radio Alba, Radio Piterpan were the interesting ones. From Germany AFN The Eagle was heard. At 1515z I heard ERA 2 Deutero Programma, which was the first Greek station for me since 1990s (I was QRT 1998-2013). From Serbia Radio Rubin was nice catch and especially Radio Ferizaj from Kosovo.

2 hours of es but unfortunately mostly powerhouses from Germany with MUF below 100 MHz. The best stations were probably the two first ones: Radio Pogoda POL and West City Radio ROU. Other worth of mentioning: Landeswelle Thüringen, Rom Radio (SRB), Hrvatski Radio Karlovac (HRV).

3½ hours of chaos. Band was open from Bosnia to UK. So much QSB and QRM that very difficult to dig anything. I have not listened recordings yet but there are stations like Radio Central (SUI), Slavonski Radio (HRV), InfoRádió (HNG), we will see.

The best opening so far and Top10-days all time. All started with CZE Fajn Radio Hity at 0506z and ended at 1214z with RTE. Very good SVK/HRV/HNG/POL opening around 07z (I had “blind recording” on as I was working), then Ireland moving to Benelux and even some Danish stations! Denmark skip is less than 1000km for my QTH. Then France and condx fininshing to UK. I still have one hour of recordings to go thru but some goodies are: Rádio SiTy (SVK), Radio Kaj Krapina (local, HRV), RMF Maxxx Oleśnica (local, POL), Radio Doxa (POL), BBC Oxford, South East Radio (IRL), Today FM (IRL), Red FM (IRL), Midwest Radio (IRL), Skala FM (DNK), Radio Skive (DNK), North Norfolk Radio, France Bleu Poitou, La radio sans pub (F), France Bleu Maine, RBM (F), Radio 538 (HOL), Sweet FM (F), Radio Eenhoorn (HOL), L’Autre Radio (F), Radio Melinda (BEL) … much more quality in these stations!

FM Es-season has been lousy so far. Even I have been quite active (and able to monitor remote via my mobile phone), Es-openings have been few and short. So far:

14.5. the first and the best day so far. Several short openings along the day. At first some AUT/DL then Italy and Slovenia and finally some French + BBC.
15.5. very short opening giving big stations from Germany and Belgium
16.5. short Yugo-opening, 90.20 Radio K4 Shqip gave me new country heard (not QSLed so far)
27.5. short one to Italy, only 88.70 Radio Maria identified
29.5. 10 minute low band opening to Italy, in the evening short opening to Romania
2.6. in the morning Bolid FM from Russia, not much else. Then some short bursts from Italy. After 12z about 10 min opening to Italy.
3.6. Radio Beograd 1 90.9 almost alone on the band
5.6. very short opening, only Ö3 Hitradio identified.
9.6. short up and down opening to France. Long skip over 2000 km.
12.6. evening opening to BLR/UKR with short skip. Only 88.5 BR Kanal Kultura (1044 km) and 88.7 Radio 24 (1212 km) identified.

FM ES season 2014 is almost over, but still yesterday I heard few Balkan stations. Unfortunately all identified stations were sending just music and I IDed them with RDS only. Almost all 2014 FM reception reports are also on the way and I already started follow ups for 2013 FM reports!

Several QSLs have arrived since last post but there has been days when 15 emails have produced 1 or 2 or nothing back. I have now 48 FM QSLs received this year but I have sent some 150 reception reports. Anyhow it seems to be easier to get a QSL on FM than on MW.

699. Radio ERA 87.90 MHz

Ukraine and Russia were not heard much in my QTH this season as my antenna is more or less fixed to south, southwest. To get QSLs from these countries seem to need that you fool around VK.com, which I have not tried this year. Radio ERA anyway replied quickly via email in Ukrainian. V/s was Anna Matviyishyna, Head of Public Relations.

700. Radio Canal 3 92.80 MHz

The 4th Swiss station which QSLed! QSL-% has been good as only RSI Rete Uno and Radio BeO have not replied. Salina Zigerli of Radio Canal 3 replied me in a week. This may be FFF as I have not found it from statistics. My 700th station to SDXL Rank!

701. Radio Studio Delta 92.80 MHz

This station I heard one month later. According to my memory, I have also heard this station in 1985 or so. Alberto Emiliani replied quickly.

702. Radio Kerry 97.60 MHz

Irish station. Trevor Galvin, Engineering & IT Manager, replied in 12 days.

703. Radio Globale 102.20 MHz

This was the first time when Radio Globale was heard in Finland with this name. This Pavia station is ex RMC – Radio Monte Carlo, Radio Pavia, Lifegate. Quick email-response.

704. Kurzemes Radio 102.20 MHz

Summer tropo (4th August) gave some nice new stations for me. This is also my first QSL from Latvia on FM, and as such country #27. They replied via Facebook.

705. MDR Jump 105.60 MHz

Meteor scatter QSL! My first one since 1983 when I heard and got QSL from BBC! MDR JUMP hotline replied via emai.

I have QSL from 1368 kHz, heard already in the 1980s, so not new station for SDXL Rank. Ed Rixon, Broadcast Engineer sent me very nice informative email. He is also radio amateur (GD6XHG).

706. Radio Studio 24 90.80 MHz

This is also very old Italian station and as such, I suppose that I heard it in the mid-80s for the first time. Now they replied in one day via email.

707. Radio Impuls 89.00 MHz

Czech and Slovak stations have been a bit nitty QSLers this season. At least Impuls replied. V/s Pavel Janda, mediální konzultant.

By far the best es-skip opening on VHF so far was in the 3rd of July. The most of the time the position of es clouds was such that it gained the southwestern listeners (like me, JMS in Bromarv and HKU remote in Utö). Conditions started to France at 0635z in the morning. The skip was quite long with the stations like Radio Classique (Chambéry), BFM Business (Vichy), RJFM (Montluçon), Radio Cactus (Charolles) and Radio Oméga 90,9 (Montbéliard) identified. Then the first opening closed at 0945 with the lonely RTE stations on the band.

Suprisingly new opening started at 1105z with the nice London pirate catches on the band: 88.0 Pulse88, 88.4 Vision Radio VRUK, 95.4 Roots FM and 95.5 On Top Radio. Propagation was mixed between UK (BBCs Solent and Essex) and France but then after 1200z skip stucked to Ireland. Next 2+ hours it was mostly Cork and Dublin with few Wales and IOM thrown in. I think I identified 23 or so Irish non-RTE stations! 88.1 NRG FM 88.1, Dublin, 106.4 Raidió na Life, 106.8 Radio Sunshine, 103.2 Dublin City FM, 103.3 Radio Ceredigion, 98.3 UCC98.3 FM, 95.6 South East Radio etc etc. “Unfortunately” the ES cloud didn’t move a bit during this opening!

Then at 1417 after short silence the band was full of very strong Italians. Good strong signals with RDS and with lots of audio IDs too. Stations like 91.8 Radio Ticino Pavia RTP-inBlu, 91.1 Radio Gamma (Savignano), 89.0 Radio Babboleo, 91.7 Radio Birikina etc. Conditions move a bit more north at 1520z and some Swiss stations were identified: 92.8 Radio Canal 3, 97.6 Rouge FM, 97.8 RSI Rete Uno, 101.2 GRRIF, 88.8 Radio Berner Oberland and 95.6 Radio Pilatus. Switzerland is always tough on FM. Then finally few Germans on the band too, eg. 103.3 Antenne Bayern. Band closed at 1630z – over 10 hours after the first opening. Wow … want more of this!

FM season has been very “dry” since I got my new 5el Triax-yagi up. I am using Perseus FM+ and this Triax up only 3 m agl with the Teamviewer remote software. Remote QTH is 12 km away from my home. This makes FM listening possible as I am living in the middle of city centre where FM-DXing is quite hard. The 3rd of July was one of the best FM days ever for me – and I have been active since the early 1980s (QRT 1997-2011). I will post this day’s log later but eg. 23 Irish stations were identified.

Here are my FM loggings for the 2013 summer season. I was using Perseus FM+ and 4 el FM yagi. Mostly I was listening in the city center where the antenna was hanging in the railing of my balcony and is in the middle of high buildings – very very poor QTH. Few openings I was listening at country side with the same set up. I have plans to have a remote station for Es season 2014, where I monitor Perseus via internet connection and the station itself is at my remote HF QTH. The plan is also to put up Körner-yagi for FM (build by OH1ZAA).
